Scales, Macro Style

Boo!

Why, hello there!

Now that I have this awesome little Pentax digital point-and-shoot camera, the Artifact has officially been retired to my camera museum. I’m still learning all the nifty things this puppy can do, including macro and supermacro. So Princess was forced to suffer as my macro model a couple weeks ago.

I’m not sure she minded all that much. She got to ham it up to the camera and play outside on the deck in Lovely little belly scalesthe sunshine for a while, which is a decent tradeoff for a boa constrictor.

The camera does have one shortcoming when it comes to photographing Princess, though I can hardly fault just this camera; it’s a common problem with photographic equipment. The problem is that I’ve yet to find a camera, digital or film, that can truly capture Princess’ coloration.

Princess is a red-tail boa, but she has this iridescence to her that’s just amazing. When the sun hits her, a rainbow sheen just glints off those scales…similar to the way that Brazilian Rainbow Boas shimmer, but far more subtle.

It’s so beautiful.

No camera yet has been able to capture Princess’ shimmer.

Although Princess’ name is, well, Princess, I’m becoming more and more convinced that she is actually a he. She’s getting far to old to be as small as she is and be female. And her tail is pretty long-normally something you see in males. Without going in for the old probe, the physical evidence is getting pretty convincing.

Regardless, though, the name stays. There’s too much history there to change it now. It’s too meaningful, so Princess will not become a Prince.

S/he will, however, be the subject of more photo shoots.

Pretty, pretty

Simply amazing!

BTW: I swear, I have been knitting! I just haven’t been taking pictures!

I finished the Lumberjack Socks and actually have been wearing them around already, and I’m more than halfway done with the first Anniversary Sock. The Panda Silk is so gorgeous; I’m not sure how it’s going to wear, but I love knitting with it.

Also, in a fit of “I need to knit this!! Now!!” I purchased all the RYC Cashcotton 4 Ply (Citron colorway) to make the Apres Surf Hoodie from the new Interweave. However, I did not purchase the needles. Ugh, needle buying….

Yeesh…

Smile pretty, little man!Not off to a very good start on that whole blog more resolution.

Oh well, Whyatt still loves me.

It’s hard to get a good photo of Whyatt. He never stops moving, and his eyes are actually a dark burgandy…which seems to preclude him to the red eye. With the Artifact, that meant I never got a shot of him. With my new little beauty, however, we’re in a different world…but that’s for a different post.

The stars aligned for this one, however. He’s pretty darn cute here…course, he’d been playing for two hours and was about to fall into blissful weasel slumber, but I’ll take ‘um where I can get ‘um.

Halcyon has taken up most of my recent knitting attention. Halcyon..in camel fiber

I had hoped all the slipped stitches and decreases would help hold it in better shape, but no such luck.

This baby rolls like a boulder down a steep hill.

I’m also thinking that this Halcyon’s going into the future gift pile, unless a good washing works some sort of miracle with the fiber. Right now it’s super itchy on my neck. Gorgeous, don’t get me wrong. And I think the fiber will even out really nicely and bloom significantly with a washing. But super itchy.

Umm...Wabi-Sabi...Course, my dedication to Halcyon doesn’t mean that I’ve forgotten all fibers.

A trip to Northampton yesterday, and a stop at Northampton Wools, introduced me to Alchemy.

I only got the one skein because it was a bit pricey. But wow…this is some amazing stuff. I can only imagine how it’s going to feel on the needles, and the color is divine.

I’m thinking fingerless gloves or a lacy hat. This one will be for me, though. The silk content makes my skin very happy.

The Alchemy splurge didn’t leave much room in my yarn-purchasing budget for much else, but I did finally pick up one hank of Misti Alpaca Chunky.

So soft!

While I’ve never worked with a bulky yarn before, I couldn’t help myself.

I haven’t been able to find an alpaca that doesn’t make me itch, but this may be a winner. It’s amazingly soft. Everytime I’ve gone into my LYS recently, I’ve had to stop and check out the Misti Chunky.

I finally gave in.

Northampton also offered Moroccan tea with dried mint leaves at Amanouz Cafe, Musaka (which was awesome), and some 20 decible earplug-style hearing protection pieces from Downtown Sounds…because I walked away from the drum set in some serious discomfort after my last practice.

Can we say ‘Hooked up’?

ZzzzzzzZZZZZZzzzzzz

Madori says, ”Whatever, Momma….”

BTW, in comparison to Whyatt, Madori is the easiest creature in the world to photograph.

A Pause

Blogging has been spotty, and will be for a while, as I help Lil Bro deal with his broken femur and subsequent surgery to repair said broken femur.

I spent 3 days in the hospital with him, and now I’m working from the office in the mornings and working from his house, in between running for juice and ginger ale and helping him reposition his leg and change his bandages, in the afternoons and evenings.

I did get my Ravelry invite, though, which is a.w.e.s.o.m.e. I can’t wait to play on it, but right now I’m Nurse Weaselmomma until further notice.
